Chapter Eighteen

As soon as Melody and Tricia finished breakfast, Melody made her way to Sly’s office to confront him for bothering her daughter. It wasn’t good that he thought it was an okay thing to do—for any reason. There was no realistic situation she could think of in which it was okay for Sly to come onto her daughter that way. None. And she planned to tell him that very thing just as soon as she saw him.

The receptionist stood, hung up the phone, and gave Melody one of her patented you’re-a-nuisance smiles. She opened her mouth to presumably give Melody the spiel about having to wait while she asked Sly if it was alright to let her in, but if she didn’t have an appointment, she better just go away and call to make one first. She would have undoubtedly followed that up with her shoo-fly gesture, executed with her too-long, crimson-lacquered nails. That is, if Melody had paid her any mind at all, or if she had even slowed down as she breezed right past the desk.

By the time the receptionist realized what was happening, Melody was already pushing the doors to Sly’s office wide.

“You can’t—”

Melody spun on her. “I just did.” She shut the door in the woman’s face.

Coriander and Sly were in the middle of what seemed to be an important conversation. Of course, Melody figured that any conversation with Coriander could seem important because of her natural flair for the dramatic.

“Excuse me,” Coriander said, eyeing Melody as if she wanted to tear off her head and play soccer with it.

“No, no. Excuse me, Coriander. I didn’t come to see you, honey. Sly’s the one I want a word or three with right now.” Melody locked her heated gaze on Sly and raised her eyebrows.

“Coriander, why don’t you be a doll and leave us to talk for a few minutes, hmm?” He cut his eyes at Coriander, but never gave her his full attention. He kept his gaze on his uninvited guest.

“Alone?”

“That’s right, dear.”

“With her?” Coriander glared at Melody as she extended one slender finger to point at her.

Sly finally turned his attention fully to Coriander. “Yes. That’s what I asked, isn’t it. Could you leave Melody and me alone to talk for a few minutes? Not so hard to comprehend, is it?”

Melody thought she would have probably landed a book across his face for speaking to her that way, but then she figured whatever floats their twisted little love boat was just fine by her. As long as it got Coriander out of the room.

The younger woman ran her lip out and turned her glare to Sly, then she sashayed past Melody, giving her a bump with her elbow and shoulder as she exited.

Melody rolled her eyes as Coriander slammed the door.

“I’m sorry you had to witness that, Melody.” He grinned at her. “Are you jealous that I’m engaged to the slinky, gorgeous Coriander Siles?”

“Really, Sly? I couldn’t care less who you’re engaged to. You should know that by now.
